RUST PREVENTION

WHY MINIS NEED PRESERVING

 It is common knowledge that Minis are very prone to rusting. Factory rust prevention methods have always been inadequate and consequently many minis have showed signs of body rot within three years of leaving the production line.

With any age of the original Mini now considered as having classic status the preservation of original panel work is all important in maintaining second hand values. It is usually the case that the mechanics of a mini will outlive the body-shell. Our rust prevention services are beneficial to a Mini of any age and will more than double its life span. Rust protection is an excellent form of investment. Replacing panels, such as sills, scuttles, valances, boot floors, front panels, wings and ‘A’ panels is extremely costly and is therefore rarely done to a satisfactory standard. Poor repair work such as the use of cover sills and incorrect use of filler often serves to accentuate the rust problem by trapping moisture. All this can be avoided if thorough rust prevention measures are employed.

    CAVITY WAX INJECTION

    The internal surfaces of all cavities prone to rust are coated in a layer of a high quality wax.

    The cavities injected:-

  • Sills
  • Rear pockets
  • Rear Valance
  • Both ‘A’ posts
  • Both ‘B’ posts
  • Boot lid
  • Both doors


    • This is the primary rust prevention measure we provide and costs £213.31.

    Only practised specialists who work with and understand minis can do wax injection effectively without missing vital areas. The hardest areas to treat are the areas most prone to rust and the operator must have a detailed knowledge of the body-shell structure. Our years of experience of stripping and rebuilding concourse minis for show purposes provides us with the vital knowledge required to undertake rust preventative measures in a thorough and effective manner that will ensure a lasting effect. Close-up photographs showing the attention to detail and originality of our restorations can be provided on request.


    OTHER RUST PREVENTION TREATMENTS

    Below are other ways that are also very beneficial in preserving your Mini.

    Under-body Protection.

    This involves removing the wheels and all the pipe work from under the wings in order to allow access to the scuttle closing plates. The underside of the vehicle is thoroughly cleaned to remove any dirt and debris. All surfaces are neatly sprayed with a layer of a high quality asphalt based coating. Careful attention is given to all areas prone to rust, such as the sills, the front end, behind the headlights, the inner wings, scuttle panel closing plates, the rear subframe, wheel arches and the insides of the front and rear valances. Cost: £187.

    Seam-seal Underside.

    It is a common misconception that rust starts from the surface. This is only the case where corrosion forms from paintwork damage such as a stone chip or scratch. However, most rust on minis starts from behind the panel-work at the seams where road water and salt penetrates. For example, the typical Mini rust found under the headlights and on the ‘A’ panels starts from behind these panels. Once established the rust grows, works its way to the surface and becomes visible. All panel joins are sealed with a very durable and adhesive polyurethane sealant.

    Scuttle Panel Protection.

    Later minis especially are very prone to rusting below the windscreen due to poor quality panel fit at the factory. Water becomes sucked behind the windscreen rubber by capillary action and wind pressure. It then penetrates the panel joint between the bulkhead and scuttle and causes rusting. The scuttle panel is very expensive and difficult to replace. This can be avoided by removing the windscreen and sealing this joint.
    Cost: £71.50.
